György Szabados who celebrates his seventieth birthday in 2009 is renowned throughout Europe in the realm of improvisatory contemporary music. After training to be a doctor, he studied music privately. In the sixties and seventies, because of political troubles, he was only allowed to perform in a few places, primarily university clubs, but in 1972 won first prize at the San Sebastian International Jazz Competition. It was not until the early 1980s that he was allowed to tour abroad regularly, record CDs and work without hindrance.
As a composer, he has written a ballet, a dance opera, a cantata and a work to commemorate the 1956 revolution, as well as numerous solo and chamber compositions. In 1983 he won the Liszt Prize and in 2000 the Gábor Szabó Life Time Achievement Award. In 2001 he was given the Prize for Hungarian Art and in 2008 won the Gramofon Prize. His most recent solo album The Land of Boldogasszony (Bells) was published in 2008.
In the seventies, Szabados founded a contemporary music workshop and this eventually led to MAKUZ (Hungarian Royal Court Orchestra), an improvisation group, which has since been the primary vehicle for his musical ideas. Tonight at the Palace of Arts, we shall hear both his older and more recent compositions, with some supreme wind soloists as well as three string players and two drummers.
