Gilbert Varga most recently conducted the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra in April 2005 at the then recently opened Palace of Arts. This time, his programme is framed by two works from Maurice Ravel. Ravel originally wrote pieces for piano duet based on five stories from Charles Perrault’s collection but in 1912 created a version for orchestra that put the Mother Goose Suite on stage.
Richard Strauss wrote his first song at the age of six and over two hundred later, wrote the Four Last Songs at the age of eighty-six. With them, the German Lied tradition entered the 20th century although many of his most beautiful songs were written in the 19th century, in the second flowering of late Romanticism. We shall hear five of these, alongside two by Gustav Mahler. Revelge (“Alarm”) is one of the twelve songs that Mahler set from Des Knabens Wunderhorn collection. The second song, Um Mitternacht (“At Midnight”) sets a verse by Friedrich Rückert. The songs by Strauss and Mahler will be sung by Szabolcs Brickner, who was a winner at the 2008 Brussels Queen Elisabeth International Singing Competition.
