Hungarian National Museum
In Hungary, as elsewhere, the concept of museums evolved from the ideas of the Enlightenment and the Reformation, in conjunction with the demand for the establishment of an independent nation-state.
The National Museum was founded by Ferenc Széchényi in 1802. His goals were to collect the works of art which represented national heritage values, to conserve them, and to make them accessible to the general public.
The Museum was constructed in a Classicist style between 1837 and 1847, based on the design of Mihály Pollack.
